What Happens to Love in a Military Marriage? (Plus GIGANTIC give-aways!)

Fri, 2014-05-09 07:10 -- Jocelyn Green

To celebrate, Dr. Gary Chapman and I are teaming up to offer some amazing give-aways--seriously, the coolest grand prize I've ever hosted. But first, we want to share with you the first chapter of our latest release: The 5 Love Languages Military Edition. I hope you'll read the chapter below, and be encouraged! There is hope for marriages in every stage! Stay tuned--the give-aways will be offered just below the chapter. Take it away, Gary! What Happens to Love in a Military Marriage? I first met Chuck in Germany. He had a successful military career—twenty-three years under his belt. However, in his own words, “My marriage is in shambles. I don’t understand love and I’m not sure you can keep love alive in a military marriage. I was madly in love with my first wife. We were high school sweethearts. We got married right after graduation, and a month later I joined the military. The first couple of years were exciting, but eventually our love grew cold. We seemed like roommates living in the same house. On the day after our tenth anniversary she went home to visit her mother and never returned. I didn’t feel all that bad about it because by this time neither one of us loved each other.” “What about your second marriage?” I inquired. “It was about a year after our divorce that I met Cathy. At the time, she was also in the military. It was one of those ‘love at first sight deals,’” he said. “It was great. We had an awesome marriage until we got assigned to different bases. That was tough. So a year later, she left the military so we could be together. Then, the baby came along and things changed. We never rediscovered the connection we had in the first year of our marriage. It was like our love evaporated. She and our son left last Tuesday to go back to the States, and I know it’s just a matter of time until she files for divorce..” “When things were going well, how did you express your love to Cathy?” I asked. “I told her how beautiful she was. I told her I loved her. I told her how proud I was to be her husband. But after three or four years, she started complaining about petty things at first—like my not taking the garbage out, or my not hanging up my clothes. Later she went to attacking my character, telling me she didn’t feel she could trust me, accusing me of being unfaithful to her. She became a totally negative person. When I met her she was one of the most positive people I had ever known. That’s one of the things that attracted me to her, she never complained about anything. Everything I did was wonderful, but after a few years, I could do nothing right. I really think I tried. I honestly don’t know what happened.” I could tell Chuck was experiencing internal struggle over what was going on in his marriage, so I said, “You still love Cathy, don’t you?” “I think I do,” he said. “I don’t have the kind of love I had when we first got married, but I certainly don’t want a divorce. I think we could have made it, but I don’t think Cathy wants to work on the marriage.” I could tell this strong warrior had a wounded heart. “Did things go downhill after the baby was born?” I asked. “Yes,” he said. “I felt like she gave all of her attention to the baby, and I no longer mattered. It was as if her goal in life was to have a baby, and after the baby she no longer needed me.” “Did you tell her that?” I asked. “Yes, I told her. She said I was crazy. She said I did not understand the stress of being a twenty-four hour nurse, and I should be more understanding and help her more. I really tried, but it didn’t seem to make any difference. After that we just grew apart. After a while there was no love left, just deadness.” Chuck continued the conversation and I listened. “What happened to love after the first year of marriage?” he asked. “Is my experience common? Is that why we have so many divorces in the military? I can’t believe this has happened to me twice. And those who don’t divorce, do they learn to live with the emptiness, or does love really stay alive in some marriages?” The questions Chuck asked are the questions thousands of military couples are asking. Sometimes the answers are couched in psychological research jargon that is almost incomprehensible. Sometimes they are couched in humor and folklore. Most of the jokes and pithy sayings contain some truth, but they are often like offering an aspirin to a person with cancer. The desire for romantic love in marriage is deeply rooted in our psychological makeup. Books abound on the subject. Television and radio talk shows deal with it. The Internet is full of advice. So are our parents and friends. Keeping love alive in our marriages is serious business. With all the help available from media experts, why is it so few couples seem to have found the secret to keeping love alive after the wedding? The Truth We’re Missing The answer to those questions is the purpose of this book. It’s not that the books and articles already published are not helpful. The problem is we have overlooked one fundamental truth: People speak different love languages. My academic training is in the area of anthropology. Therefore, I have studied in the area of linguistics, which identifies a number of major language groups: Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, English, Portuguese, Greek, German, French, and so on. Most of us grow up learning the language of our parents and siblings, which becomes our primary or native tongue. Later, we may learn additional languages—but usually with much more effort. These become our secondary languages. We speak and understand best our native language. We feel most comfortable speaking that language. The more we use a secondary language, the more comfortable we become conversing in it. If we speak only our primary language and encounter someone else who speaks only his or her primary language, which is different from ours, our communication will be limited. We must rely on pointing, grunting, drawing pictures, or acting out our ideas. We can communicate, but it’s awkward. Language differences are part and parcel of human culture. If we are to communicate effectively across cultural lines, we must learn the language of those with whom we wish to communicate. In the area of love, it is similar. Your emotional love language and the language of your spouse may be as different as Chinese from English. No matter how hard you try to express love in English, if your spouse understands only Chinese, you will never understand how to love each other. Chuck was speaking the language of words of affirmation to Cathy when he told her she was beautiful, he loved her, and he was proud to be her husband. He was speaking love, and he was sincere, but she did not understand his language. Perhaps she was looking for love in his behavior and didn’t see it. Being sincere is not enough. We must be willing to learn our spouse’s primary love language if we are to effectively communicate love. My conclusion after thirty-five years of marriage counseling is that there are five emotional love languages—five ways people speak and understand emotional love. In the field of linguistics a language may have numerous dialects or variations. Similarly, within the five basic emotional love languages, there are many dialects. That accounts for the magazine articles titled “10 Ways to Let Your Spouse Know You Love Her,” “20 Ways to Keep Your Man at Home,” or “365 Expressions of Marital Love.” There are not 10, 20, or 365 basic love languages. In my opinion, there are only five. However, there may be numerous dialects. The number of ways to express love within a love language is limited only by one’s imagination. The important thing is to speak the love language of your spouse. Seldom do a husband and wife have the same primary emotional love language. We tend to speak our primary love language, and we become confused when our spouse does not understand what we are communicating. We are expressing our love, but the message does not come through because we are speaking what, to them, is a foreign language. Therein lies the fundamental problem, and it is the purpose of this book to offer a solution. That’s why I dare to write another book on love. Once we discover the five basic love languages and understand our own primary love language, as well as the primary love language of our spouse, we will then have the needed information to apply the ideas in the books and articles. Once you identify and learn to speak your spouse’s primary love language, I believe you will have discovered the key to a long-lasting, loving marriage. These languages can be spoken even when you are separated by deployment. Love need not evaporate after the wedding, but in order to keep it alive most of us will have to put forth the effort to learn a secondary love language. We cannot rely on our native tongue if our spouse does not understand it. If we want them to feel the love we are trying to communicate, we must express it in his or her primary love language. *Learn more about The 5 Love Languages Military Edition!  Pssst. I'm pleased to introduce Janet Bly at this stop! A self-described “city girl with a country heart,” she writes, speaks, and mentors other authors through the Jerry B. Jenkins’ Christian Writer’s Guild. She has also judged many writing contests, including for Writer’s Digest, American Christian Fiction Writers, and My Book Therapy (all three of which are my personal favorite resources for writers, by the way!). I was first introduced to Janet in magazine article, where she shares about finishing her late husband’s book on his behalf. Fascinating and inspiring. Visit Janet at her Web site, Facebook page, Twitter, and Pinterest! Janet, thank you for being here! When did you learn you wanted to be a writer? After my husband, Stephen, graduated from seminary and was called as pastor to his first church, I wanted to search for my God-given task. That led me on a journey of trying all kinds of ministries within the church and activities out in the community, as well as taking classes and going to conferences. One of these was a writers’ conference at Mount Hermon in California. After several years I determined to pursue writing. I soon got articles, poems and fillers published. I describe this journey in more in my book, Managing Your Restless Search. One day, while transcribing my husband’s sermons for the congregation, I realized some of his stories and sermon themes could be edited for magazines. I asked his permission to send them out, along with mine. When he began to receive acceptances, he focused on writing articles and short stories. You have written books, too. What are they? I have authored and co-authored with my husband Stephen 31 nonfiction and fiction books, plus been contributing author to five others. My book titles include The Hidden West Series, The Carson City Chronicles, Awakening Your Sense of Wonder, Hope Lives Here and The Heart of a Runaway. My three sons and I finished my late husband's last novel, Stuart Brannon's Final Shot, as a family project. Can a committee write fiction? We had the passion and a four-month deadline to find out. Read more about this story here. I remember reading about this! What lesson has God taught you recently? When I lost my husband there seemed to be things left undone, unsaid, and unanswered. No complete and satisfying end to his story or our journey together. Threads left hanging stretched beyond my sight. I’ve since realized we are all in the middle of stories. It may take eternity to see the full plot, to get the right point of view for scenes that puzzle us here. I know I must trust God about mine. Most times I do, especially when I consider this verse: “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:8,9 NKJV). [[{"type":"media", "view_mode":"media_large", "fid":"999", "attributes":{"class":"media-image alignright size-medium wp-image-1857", "typeof":"foaf:Image", "style":"", "width":"300", "height":"300", "alt":"BlyBook LostManuscript1A"}}]] Those are such powerful verses, and a wonderful perspective for all of us. Tell us what you are working on now. I’m writing a new contemporary women's fiction novel and am more than halfway through. The working title is Wailing in the Wind. I also hope to get started on a nonfiction book later this year. Meanwhile, I've been able to re-release some of Stephen Bly's novels, including one of his most popular, The Austin-Stoner Files. Book #1 The Lost Manuscript of Martin Taylor Harrison will be one of the giveaways for this Scavenger Hunt. The winner will have a choice of hardback/large print or paperback. What an intriguing title! Tell us a bit about this book. In The Lost Manuscript of Martin Taylor Harrison, New York editor Lynda Austin searches for a manuscript she hopes will rock the publishing world. And boost her career. An eccentric stranger brought a copy to her publishing house. He claimed it's the third novel of Martin Taylor Harrison, their most successful author.  But before they can decide whether to believe him or not, he is killed in an accident and the novel destroyed. Lynda heads West to find the original ... in a remote cabin somewhere in the canyons of the Arizona Strip.  And she finds a guide: a rodeo cowboy named Brady Stoner. Nothing in her urbane, sophisticated life has prepared her for the fear, danger, or primitive conditions of this trip. And nothing has prepared her for this simple bronc-buster. Thank you so much for being with us today, Janet! Readers, sign up for Janet’s newsletter for the latest on new releases here. THE SCAVENGER HUNT CAN-DOs: Before you go, write down this STOP #9 clue: professionals You'll find a link to STOP #10 at the end of this post. Bonus Give-away! Something for Every Reader Give-Away!

Thu, 2013-09-26 06:00 -- Jocelyn Green
[[{"type":"media", "view_mode":"media_large", "fid":"976", "attributes":{"class":"media-image alignleft wp-image-1697", "typeof":"foaf:Image", "style":"", "width":"280", "height":"560", "alt":"Bischof_BlogTour_2_400x400_update"}}]]A note from Jocelyn: I am so excited to be part of author Joanne Bischof's "Something for Every Reader" blog tour to celebrate the release of My Hope Is Found, the grand finale to her Cadence of Grace series! She's here today with  a devotional thought, and at the end of the post you may enter to win her book, plus mine! Be sure to check out the other stops along the blog tour to enter for other terrific book packages as well. Weeping vs. Joy by Joanne Bischof As a writer works on a novel, we often think of a verse that might fit the story. An epigraph, of sorts. As I was writing Be Still My Soul, I knew that the opening verse would be Psalm 30:5. And as author Jocelyn Green was working on Widow of Gettysburg, she knew the opening verse would be Psalm 30:5, too! When we became friends, neither of us knew about it until later on when our books came out. We had a good laugh. [[{"type":"media", "view_mode":"media_large", "fid":"977", "attributes":{"class":"media-image aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1713", "typeof":"foaf:Image", "style":"", "width":"300", "height":"269", "alt":"Widowsigning"}}]] Truly…it’s the perfect verse for both books. A great many stories, really. Because in many ways, this verse encompasses the beauty of a story. That though weeping may endure for a night…joy comes in the morning. It’s the journey we sometimes travel in life, the thread woven through a tale. But why the weeping? Why can’t life just be easy and grand and always delightful? I think because it’s part of the story. It’s part of our story, at times. I look back over my life and I see the valleys of shadow… the seasons of life when nothing made sense and the darkness felt ever-present. Have you ever had a time like that? It feels big and heavy and we wonder if the sun could ever rise again. It’s that moment when—as we are faced with nothing but loss and emptiness—God reaches down and we feel His touch. His ever-present goodness. That promise that no matter what, He is by our side. He will never leave us or forsake us. It’s what we cling to. Resting in the comfort of His faithfulness. And then suddenly, the mountain comes into view, the shadows fall away. We never know what it’s going to look like but then, there it is… that light on the horizon. Golden, warm—freeing. For joy comes in the morning. The sun hits us and we feel it through every inch of our bodies. Hope infusing our every limb. A glance back shows the valley, and while at the time, we may have yearned to be free of the darkness, we also know that it’s because of the valley, that we can experience the full joy of the light. “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” Can you think of a time when Psalm 30:5 unfolded in your life? So the Charlotte-inspired give-away includes: A beautiful hand-embroidered linen table covering I personally picked up in Vienna, Austria, several years ago. This piece is about a yard square in size, and is typically placed diagonally on the center of your table, either layered on a full-size tablecloth, or simply placed on the bare table. This one is ivory with maroon and pink flowers. It still has the tag pinned to it--it's never been used! Kathleen Maher's Irish Stew

Mon, 2013-05-20 14:17 -- Jocelyn Green
UPDATE: The winner, using random.org, is Laurel! Congrats! Today I am so excited to have Kathleen L. Maher with us to share her family recipe for Irish stew. She is also graciously giving away a $15 gift card to Amazon to one lucky commenter! But first, allow me to tell you about her new Civil War novella, Bachelor Buttons. Here's the blurb: The daughter of immigrants who fled the Irish Potato Famine, Rose Meehan longs for a better life than the tenements of New York City. Courted by two men--a young doctor who represents material security, and a poor violin instructor who has captured her heart--she must choose between a life of advantage-grabbing or a life of faith. When Manhattan explodes in mob rule following Lincoln's unpopular draft, the heroic action of one suitor brings provision for those she loves, and reveals God's plan. I knew I would like this novella even before I opened it because it dares to set the story against a very tumultuous piece of American history: the New York City draft riots of 1863. That's why I started reading it in the first place. But what kept me reading--and what made me LOVE it--was Kathleen Maher's commitment to history (even the parts we're not proud of), and the sweet romance that  unfolded against the backdrop of war. Having researched this time and place myself, I found myself nodding and mentally applauding the author for capturing cultural nuances and delivering them to us in such an intriguing package. I can't wait to read more from Kathleen Maher. Even more delightful: the romance in this story is based on the true courtship story of Kathleen's Irish immigrant great-great-grandmother. Now for her recipe! I'll let her take over from here... Irish Stew Irish immigrants like my great, great grandmother were often poor and had to make due with whatever they might have had from their gardens and in their larders. Stew was a perfect fallback meal, utilizing what was on hand with room for embellishment. For my stew, I like to use the same plain staples like carrots, onions, potatoes and meat that most kitchens would have had handy 150 years ago. Simple, easy, and hearty enough for the coldest New York winter day. Add onion (and garlic), caramelize on medium heat.   Add water (or broth), , cover and simmer for 1 hour on low. Add potatoes, carrots, (celery) and simmer for another half hour. Separate juices into medium saucepan: measure flour into mason jar and add 1 cup warm juices, seal jar and shake vigorously together (for fewer lumps in gravy), return to pan of juices on low heat, stirring until bubbling, add milk, then salt and pepper to taste. Combine gravy with meat and potatoes and serve! Yield: Enough for one large Irish Catholic family The Give-Away To enter the drawing for the $15 Amazon gift card, simply leave a comment answering the following question: What's your ethnic heritage? A Liberty Inspired Give-away!

Wed, 2013-05-08 10:47 -- Jocelyn Green
I am so excited to offer today's give-away to one lucky reader! Widow of Gettysburg has officially launched, and I hope that many of you have your copies already in hand. Now, wouldn't you just love to enhance your reading experience? Christy-nominated author and craftista Joanne Bischof has created a handmade rag rug for this give-away package, just like the rag rugs in Liberty Holloway's farmhouse, and I'm contributing two CDs of music: the soundtrack to the Gettysburg movie, as well as the soundtrack to the movie Glory. (Glory tells the story of the 54th Mass. regiment which fought bravely at Fort Wagner a couple weeks after the battle of Gettysburg. One of my characters fought with the 54th. It is a GREAT movie!) I listened to both of these soundtracks as I was writing Widow of Gettysburg, and I can tell you without a doubt, you will LOVE hearing the music in the background while you read! And now imagine sinking your toes into a comfy rag rug--add a glass of lemonade and a slice of rhubarb pie, and you'll be all set for a total sensory experience! ;) [[{"type":"media", "view_mode":"media_large", "fid":"866", "attributes":{"class":"media-image aligncenter wp-image-1399", "typeof":"foaf:Image", "style":"", "width":"490", "height":"490", "alt":"rugandmusic"}}]] Bonus! Now, for all you crafty people out there, Joanne has given us a special treat, and made a rag rug video tutorial using this rug as the example! So if you would like to make your own, you totally can. Just watch below. (Even if you aren't interested in the project, take a peek anyway to get to know Joanne, author of Be Still My Soul and Though My Heart Is Torn, a little better. The amazing music in the background was composed and performed by her very own father! How cool is that!?) Enter the Drawing Here's how to enter! Take a look at the three quotes below, all of which are taken from Widow of Gettysburg. Now leave a comment telling me which one means the most to you, and why, if you want to share. (If you don't want to say why, just say which is your favorite.) Click on the image to see them larger. [[{"type":"media", "view_mode":"media_large", "fid":"953", "attributes":{"class":"media-image aligncenter wp-image-1403", "typeof":"foaf:Image", "style":"", "width":"574", "height":"191", "alt":"3widowimages"}}]] For extra entries: Share this blog post on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, or if somehow you have avoided all social media, just send the link to a friend in an email. Go to my new "Inspiration" photo album on my Facebook author page, and "share" one or more of the photos there. You get one entry for each one you share. Go to my "Inspiring Faith and Courage" album on Pinterest and "repin" one or more of the pins there. Again, one entry for each repin. Like my Facebook author page, or tell me that you've already liked it. :) Send me a photo of you with your copy of Widow of Gettysburg, along with your permission to use it on my FB page and on this Web site. You could email it to me (Jocelyn@jocelyngreen.com) or simply post it on my FB author page. If you've already read Widow but would still love this package, post a review on Amazon and you'll receive TWO entries! Now, if you haven't read Wedded to War (book 1 in the series) yet but would like to, and own an ereader device, say so in your comment. River North is throwing in a free ebook of Christy Award finalist Wedded to War to one reader who posts a review of Widow. :) I don't always check my reviews at Amazon, so please tell me after you've left a review so I can give you credit! Thanks! Don't forget to tell me in the comments section if you've done any of these "extras"! Thank you! I will draw a winner on Friday, May 17! Good luck! If you don't win, though, I hope you won't let that stop you from finding a copy on your own. Read about the book and watch the book trailer here.

Military Appreciation Month! A Story, A Give-away, and Practical Prayer

Mon, 2013-05-06 10:26 -- Jocelyn Green
The month of May is Military Appreciation Month! And I sure do appreciate our military. Being a former military wife myself, I can relate to the challenges and joys our military families go through. But even now that we lead a civilian lifestyle, I will never stop appreciating the sacrifices the military makes for the rest of us. Do you have time for a little story? A couple of years ago I was working on Stories of Faith and Courage from the Home Front, and one evening after the kids were in bed, I interviewed a Gold Star father who had lost his precious son in Iraq. It was an emotional conversation, and though my heart strings were pulled tight, I held it together while I was on the phone. (If you want to read the stories that resulted from that phone call, you can read them in the book on days December 3-6.) After we hung up, I cleaned up my notes and then went to check on my sleeping children, as I normally do before I call it a night. When I saw my little girl, though, the dam around my heart burst and I could not help but weep. Because there she was, sleeping with a small U.S. flag in her arms. I don't know why she had gotten out of bed to find it and decided to sleep with it that night. But it struck me that so many parents have lost their children to war so that my own children can live free. Thank you, military families! [[{"type":"media", "view_mode":"media_large", "fid":"952", "attributes":{"class":"media-image aligncenter", "typeof":"foaf:Image", "style":"", "width":"430", "height":"574", "alt":"100_3106"}}]] Book Give-Away and Sale [[{"type":"media", "view_mode":"media_large", "fid":"772", "attributes":{"class":"media-image alignleft wp-image-900", "typeof":"foaf:Image", "style":"", "width":"140", "height":"218", "alt":"mwives nt cover_200"}}]]This coming Friday is Military Spouse Appreciation Day, specifically, so I am giving away two gift packages on the Faith Deployed blog! The first one contains both of my Faith Deployed books PLUS the new Military Wives' New Testament with Psalms & Proverbs, and the second gifts package includes Tour of Duty by Sara Horn, Heroes at Home by Ellie Kay, and Wounded Warrior, Wounded Home, by Marshele Carter Waddell and Dr. Kelly Orr. If you're a military wife, hop on over and enter the drawing! If you know a military wife, share the link with her so she can enter, too! Here's another cool thing going on in honor of Military Appreciation Month. Zondervan is running a special throughout the month of May. Buy one Military Wives’ New Testament with Psalms & Proverbs, get one FREE! Here’s how: Visit www.churchsource.com Add 2 copies to your cart, and enter promo code BD5W11 at checkout. How to Pray Even if we don't know any military personally, we can still pray for active duty members AND their spouses. Not sure what to pray for them, other than, "Keep them safe and encourage their hearts"? Well, I asked a military chaplain to give me a list of specific prayer requests for our service members, and I asked his wife to do the best internet casino same so we know how to pray for the spouses on the home front. In fact, I'm sharing these prayer requests in Book Fun Magazine this month, in an article I wrote that begins on page 77. To read it, visit the magazine, and then you can just flip pages on the way to page 77 (there are some great articles in there!) OR you can click on the search icon in the toolbar, type in "home front" and then click on the search result to go directly to the article. (There is also an excerpt from Stories of Faith and Courage from the Home Front there!) Happy Military Appreciation Month!
