My Gettysburg Trip Scrapbook

Mon, 2013-07-15 07:00 -- Jocelyn Green

UPDATE: This give-away is now closed. Thanks to everyone who entered, the winner is Anissa Meyer! Since a picture is worth a thousand words, I thought I'd let my snapshots from my recent trip to Gettysburg do most the talking in this blog post. Though we took hundreds of photos, I'm mostly just sharing scenes that relate to my latest release, Widow of Gettysburg, with a few "just for fun" shots thrown in. Please enjoy these glimpses, and be sure to scroll to the end for the Gettysburg Grand Give-away! We start with the building that is shown on the novel's cover. (Captions are included with each photo. You may click on the images to see them larger.)

The Gettysburg Grand Give-away!

I've teamed up a couple of very talented ladies to bring you a remarkable give-away! Here's what we have for one lucky winner:

  • A handmade baby quilt in patriotic colors, reminiscent of Liberty Holloway's baby quilt in Widow of Gettysburg. Only this one is color-coordinated and pinwheel-patterned. This is courtesy of my author friend Ann-Margret Hovsepian! (Connect with her on Facebook here.)
  • A handmade doll modeled after Liberty Holloway, courtesy of another author friend, Pat Iacuzzi, who creates historical dolls like this one for museums. (Psst- Pat is running a concurrent give-away of a 15-inch Charlotte Waverly doll, plus Godiva chocolate, a silk fan, and a Currier & Ives print, so hop on over to her Hope Inspired Stories blog here! Charlotte is the heroine of Wedded to War, book 1 in the Heroines Behind the Lines series.)
  • I'm throwing in two books: Farms at Gettysburg (self-explanatory) and The Civil War Sewing Circle, which not only has Civil War quilt patterns in it, but also photos and letters from Civil War couples that are sure to touch your heart regardless of whether you quilt.

To enter, please leave a comment sharing either 1) which photos you enjoyed the most from this blog post, or 2) something from your own trip to Gettysburg.

For extra entries, you may:

The drawing will close at 11:59pm on Monday July 29. A winner will be selected using random.org.

Good luck!

Love LRT the most - my favorite place on earth to watch a sunset. Looks like you had a great time, Jocelyn! I was there the following weekend. It was brutally hot. Thanks for sharing your pictures.

Submitted by Jocelyn Green on
Loree, that's what I've heard! The place was swarming with tourists most the time we were there. This pic was taken around 8:30am on July 2--150 years to the day after the battle took place there. Chilling.

I visited Gettysburg many years ago, and was totally drawn into the vision of what a horrific sight those fields must have been! I would love to visit again, especially to see the museum! God bless, and thanks for sharing from your trip. Betti

Submitted by Jocelyn Green on
Betti. yes, the new museum is fantastic. The three floors are dedicated to: the first day's battle; care of the wounded; and faith and freedom, which addresses the question- Where was God at Gettysburg? It is extremely well done!

I enjoyed meeting you at the Seminary Ridge Museum. I'll have to go back and tour inside when it isn't as crowded. I like your picture of the Elizabeth Thorn statue because of her story. I read someplace that the baby girl, Rose Meade Thorn she was carrying was never healthy and died at the age of 14. I've walked past the Christ Lutheran Church when they were having coffee hour on the sidewalk with women in period costume which isn't very unusual in Gettysburg.

Submitted by Jocelyn Green on
Peggy, I loved meeting you, too! Thanks so much for coming out. You are correct about little Rose Meade Thorn. So sad. We also went to Christ Lutheran Church's Civil War Songs & Poems evening service, which was wonderful.

Hi Jocelyn: I really enjoyed your photos of Gettysburg. On my visit to Gettysburg, years ago, I was moved by seeing Little Round Top and the wheat field the most. Thank you for the opportunity to win one of your fabulous giveaways. What a wonderful experience you had even though hot!

Submitted by Jocelyn Green on
Thanks Diane! Little Round Top is quite awe-inspiring.

Hello, Jocelyn. What great photos you were able to capture. We took our kids to visit PA one summer for a week, and toured so many places. Gettysburg was a highlight, and I'll never forget looking over the barren field of nothing where so much history took place and many lives were lost. Your book looks great! I know the research was interesting to do, although a bittersweet experience.

Submitted by Jocelyn Green on
Bittersweet is right. :) So glad you were able to tour Gettysburg among other places. I wish everyone could get there at least once in their lives.

Submitted by Leslie Hanks on
My favorite picture is the one of you and Julie! During my latest visit to Gettysburg, I enjoyed the new Visitor Center Museum. It was amazing. Highly recommended to all!

Submitted by Jocelyn Green on
Leslie, do you know Julie? I so enjoyed meeting her and Lucas! I love Pages of the Past Bookstore! It really was one of my favorite parts of my trip.

Submitted by Connie R. on
I love the statue of Elizabeth Thorn! Thanks for the giveaway!

Submitted by Jocelyn Green on
I do too, Connie! It is beautiful.

Wow - LOVED looking at these! How to choose. Of course, I love the medical pics, the amputation set, the pics of anything to do with the hospital. The boards across the pews was interesting. I had pictured the patients just lying on the pews like a child does during church. But I think my favorite is the last one, The Wheatfield, with the flowers growing out of the rock. Such incredible spiritual truth there. I've never been to Gettysburg - or anywhere in Pennsylvania. What an incredible trip that would be. Love the giveaway! And you know I already "Like" you - on FB and in real life! :-)

Submitted by Jocelyn Green on
Linda, I'm so glad you enjoyed the photos! Yes, I love that last one too. I was so delighted to find such a perfect illustration of the profound spiritual truth. I hope you can make it to Gettysburg some day in person. You'd love it! :)

Submitted by Kathleen L. Maher on
Stellar pictures! I'm so glad you had a good visit and got to tour so many wonderful sites. What a knockout giveaway! I am sharing this on my fictionaddictionfix blog, and on fb and twitter.

Submitted by Jocelyn Green on
Thank you so much, Kathleen! I thought of you when I saw the Irish memorial. And the Irish gift shop. And the Irish.... there is a lot of Irish stuff in Gettysburg! :) Thanks for sharing this post around! I really appreciate it.

Jocelyn, I just finished Widow of Gettysburg this week. It's an amazing book. I wanted to tell you that while I've been doing emails this morning, I had American Pickers on TV. They visited The Gettysburg Museum of History, and that caught my eye, after having just finished your book. The museum curator hired the pickers to find some things he needs like a Confederate sword, a Union carbine, and lots of other interesting things. Anyway, it was cool. I loved all the pictures you shared.

Submitted by Jocelyn Green on
Thank you Vickie! Wow, I wish I could have seen that episode. I keep hoping they'll put American Pickers on streaming Netflix. :) Thanks for sharing that with me!

Jocelyn, thanks so much for sharing your lovely pix, and your giveaway with us. When I was in 9th grade in the MD suburbs of DC, ages ago, our class trip was to Gettysburg. At the time, the Cyclorama had just opened. Being at the battle field was somber, even for a 9th grader. I need to get back to see all the new museums.

Submitted by Jocelyn Green on
Sandy, yes, if you could go back again that would be wonderful! I'm glad you enjoyed the photos in the meantime. :)

Submitted by Katie J. on
Such a fantastic giveaway. I love the photos especially the photo of the train station and the photos of the fields. Thank you for sharing. Someday I hope to travel to Gettysburg; I really enjoy history and love visiting historic places.

Submitted by Jocelyn Green on
Katie, then you would really love Gettysburg, because so many sites have been preserved so well. There's nothing run-down about it-it's still charming!

Submitted by amyc on
I loved the Wheatfield pic. I went to Gettysburg abt 25 years ago and don't remember much. I was young then. I'm ready to go back now. :) Campbellamyd at Gmail dot com

My favorite picture is the one with the chocolate.

Awesome pics! I love getting visuals for books! I am currently in the middle of Widow of Gettysburg and it is so good! Though I will admit that some of the scenes made me queasy! But it's proof that your book is awesome if I keep reading after that!

Submitted by Jocelyn Green on
Abbi, sorry to make you sick to your stomach! And just imagine, I was going easy on you in those scenes! :) Thanks for sticking with it, it does get less stomach-turning after the mid-point. :)

Submitted by Abbi Hart on
Haha-It's ok! I have a VERY weak stomach and my fam loves to torment me with it. Just the mention of blood or anything like that and I can't take it! Glad to know it's not as bad for the rest of the book! I really am loving this one!

Many years ago we took a a trip to Gettysburg so our teenage son could see first-hand history alive. His favorite part was to climb all over the rocks at Devil's Den. I experienced standing in the quiet of the hillside and imagining the fear and silence of waiting for a battle to begin. Your pictures were great and I enjoyed seeing the one of you and Denise because we met her when she came to visit you and of course the one of you and hubby. Keep writing and posting and enjoying new friends.

Submitted by Jocelyn Green on
We loved seeing Devil's Den, too. Such strange topography at Gettysburg, such variety! Truly amazing, especially when imagining the battles that took place there. Thanks for your comment, Linda!

Hi Jocelyn...These are AMAZING, and very touching photos of hallowed ground. I am so glad memories of our past are still being fostered for future generations. Your husband's service and your books contribute so much to the value of our country's history. Thank you for sharing! God bless you!

So happy to see the photos and hear how it all went!

I've been to Gettysburg twice and really want to return. Such an interesting and humbling place to see. To think of what happened there and realize the scope of it. We lost about 50,000 men in 3 days of fighting at Gettysburg. Compare that to less than 4,500 soldiers during the entire Iraq war. Staggering! Love the look of the quilting book and - of course - the farm book too! You've hit two of my favorite topics there. Thanks for the chance to win. I've Tweeting and FBed your link

I loved all the pictures, but the candlelight service at the seminary was beautiful. I've never had the opportunity or privilege to go to Gettysburg. Thank you for sharing your trip and experience. Barbara Thompson barbmaci61(at)yahoo(dot)com

The pictures are fantastic. I was in Gettysburg the same time you were this month. I am sorry I missed your book signings, but I wanted to meet you and Sarah Sites Rodgers very much. All three of us wrote great stories/published great works about heroines of Gettysburg. I had a chance to meet Julie and Aaron. You are correct, very nice people. I hope we cross paths in the future. I would love to hear what inspired you to write Widow of Gettysburg.

My favorite picture is probably the one of the Elizabeth Thorn monument. It is very nice.

I thought it was fascinating to see how the church pews were converted to hospital "beds". What an amazing visual. The Seminary Ridge Museum amputee set was eerie, but interesting since I just finished reading about the rustic surgeries in "Wedded to War". I couldn't help thinking of how many of the places you visited on this trip will be featured in another novel, and I will look back on this blog after I've read the scenes in your books. Looks like a wonderful trip, Jocelyn!
