If You Like THESE Books, You May Like Between Two Shores

Sun, 2019-01-27 15:33 -- Jocelyn Green

In case you’re not sure if Between Two Shores  is your cup of tea, allow me to tell you a little more about it. Here is the blurb:

The daughter of a Mohawk mother and French father in 1759 Montreal, Catherine Duval would rather remain neutral in a world tearing itself apart. Content to trade with both the French and the British, Catherine is pulled into the Seven Years' War against her wishes when her British ex-fiancé, Samuel Crane, is taken prisoner by her father. Samuel claims he has information that could help end the war, and he asks Catherine to help him escape.

Peace appeals to Catherine, even if helping the man who broke her heart does not. But New France is starving, and she and her loved ones may not survive another winter of conflict-induced famine. When the dangers of war arrive on her doorstep, Catherine and Samuel flee by river toward the epicenter of the battle between England and France. She and Samuel may impact history, but she fears the ultimate cost will be higher than she can bear.

Important note: this novel is historical fiction, which is different from historical romance. The vast majority of historical novels ARE in fact, historical romance, and when you look at the cover of Between Two Shores and see a woman in a beautiful gown, it’s easy to assume this will be one of those books.

It isn’t.

When I say it’s a work of historical fiction rather than romance, that means the overarching plot is not how a man and woman get together in the end of the book. It is straight historical, which means there is more freedom to explore other themes. (Authors Susie Finkbeiner, Heather Day Gilbert, and Ann Tatlock are a few authors of straight historical fiction whose plots do not revolve around romance.) Between Two Shores is a character-driven novel of family dynamics and shifting loyalties in a time of war. The heroine, who is half French and half Mohawk, is caught in the middle and must discover where she belongs in all of it, and what her role will cost her. Don’t worry, we still go very deep into interpersonal relationships.

Here are a few more ideas to help you decide whether you might enjoy Between Two Shores.

If you liked Love's Pursuit by Siri Mitchell, you might like Between Two Shores because neither is a conventional romance, and the heroines have strong character journeys and spiritual arcs.

If you liked A Moonbow Night by Laura Frantz, you might like Between Two Shores because both heroines act as guides in the wilderness, and in both books, the landscape is vividly portrayed.

If you liked Burning Sky by Lori Benton, you might like Between Two Shores because both heroines have Mohawk and European cultures in their identities.

If you liked the way Lynn Austin told the story in Where We Belong, you might like Between Two Shores because both books unfold in a nonlinear way. By that I mean, in the first half of my novel, I insert a handful of scenes that took place years before the story begins in Chapter One, in order to slowly reveal the nuances of relationships between characters.

If you liked the classic novel for young readers Calico Captive by Elizabeth George Speare, you might like Between Two Shores because both novels are set partially in Montreal (or just outside of it) during the Seven Years’ War, and both have characters who were captured from British colonies and held in New France. (In Calico Captive, the main characters are the captives. In Between Two Shores, the main character is a woman who ransomed one.)

Of course, you’re also fee to read the reviews already posted on Goodreads. If you do decide to read Between Two Shores, I hope you enjoy it!

Have you read any of the books listed above? What did you think? If you've also read Between Two Shores already, did it remind you of any of these, or of other books I didn't mention?

I thought of two: The Pelican Bride by Beth White The Captured Bride by Michelle Griep Love the flavor of Last of the Mohicans ( #3? )

Submitted by Jocelyn Green on
Ah yes! The Captured Bride is also set during the same war, and the heroine has a Mohawk connection. Both White and Griep do a great job bringing history to life.

It’s hard to say what this book is like. It’s so original! It’s wonderful!

Between Two Shores definitely reminds me of books written by Laura Frantz and Lori Benton. I have read both mentioned above, as well as Love's Pursuit by Siri Mitchell. You have done such a wonderful job of illuminating complicated history in this book.

I love this post with the comparisons! I have read a couple of these books and they are great. Of course, your writing never disappoints.

I loved A Moonbow Night and Burning Sky! Yes, your story reminds me of those stories.Historical fiction is my favorite genre whether it has romance or not! To me, your stories really remain in my mind which I love, considering how much I like to read. Sometimes, I have to remind myself what happened in a book, even I book I really loved, but yours stick with me. As always, well done Jocelyn!!!

I've never really read any book like this except for your other books--You are the author that introduced me to historical fiction-I'll will have to start reading more in this genre.

What a wonderful post on your new book! I haven't read any of the comparison pieces, but I'm adding them to my "want to read" shelf! While I'm about two-thirds of the way through "Between Two Shores," there is still a bit of love interest (or lack-of) within, but I won't say too much and give anything away. I appreciate a good historical romance just as much as a good historical fiction, and I'm loving "Between Two Shores!"

Love these comparisons! I just started reading the book yesterday, so I can't wait to see how the story unfolds!

I have read a Moonbow night by Laura Frantz and enjoyed it. I have also read Love's Pursuit, gulp, even though that book is not my favorite story at all...it is a memorable one that has stuck with me through the years. The plot twist in that story left me flabbergasted and unable to pick up a another book for a couple of weeks.

I loved Between Two Shores. Such an excellent book. It very much felt like reading Last of the Mohicans. There's actually one moment in Between Two Shores where I looked at my husband and said, "I wonder if this is a 'Last of the Mohicans' reference. It reminds me so much of that book!"

Between Two Shores was so beautiful I cried, it reminded me of books that Laura Frantz writes.

I enjoyed this post. I am almost ready to post my review of Between Two Shores. It has been a great book.

I'm about to start "Between Two Shores" later on today and so excited! It is such a beautiful book!

I totally agree with this! Although I do think Between Two Shores was so unique and beautiful that there's not a lot of books to compare it to.

I loved reading Between Two Shores. I have a hard time giving a book 5 stars, but I easily gave yours a 5 star review. It is not necessarily a happily ever after in the sense of romance but Catherine does find her way. Bright Star is such a courageous and strong figure. You have captured the time and place so well (or at least what I would think it would be!) This is just flat out a great book. One I will remember and recommend for a long time to come. I agree w/ Paula regarding The Captured Bride and your comment as to Griep bringing history to life. I enjoy Michelle Griep's books too.

Yes, I have read all of the books above except Calico Captive!!!!!! I loved each one!!!!!!!!! I am anxious to read your newest book, Between Two Shores

I loved Between Two Shores. It is hard to compare it to a specific book, but if you like historical fiction, it is a must read! Fans of Lori Benton and Laura Frantz will love this book.

I have not yet had the privilege to read any of the books that might compare. I just thoroughly enjoyed BTS and look forward to reading it again!

I haven't had the pleasure of reading the books shown above, but I have read Between Two Shores. In my opinion, it is Jocelyn's best thus far. It is written with depth, compassion and the research for this book is phenomenal!

These books all sound wonderful. I'm excited to read Between Two Shores soon.

I have actually read all those books; as these things go, some I have liked more than others, but I did not dislike a single one of them. Good news for when Between Two Shores arrives!

Submitted by Becky Lewis on
What a great idea, to share not only comparable authors, but their similar works. However, I believe Between Two Shores is unique in its offering.

Submitted by Kristine Morgan on
Between Two Shores definitely reminded me of Calico Captive, one of my all time favorite books!

Jocelyn your book is awesome!! I’m also reading A Bound Heart, by Laura Frantz and you definitely remind me of her. Such deep and spiritual characters! And how their faith help them overcome so many hardships! A true gem this new book of yours!! I can’t wait for the release and that many people can enjoy it as I am!

I’m just getting into Between Two Shores but I love it already! I can’t make an opinion yet about it being like another book. I love historical fiction though. It’s my favorite genre.

Submitted by Mary Koester on
I wish more authors thought to do this comparison. I love to read similar storylines and this comparison makes it easy to choose something similar. Lori Benton and Laura Frantz are consistently two favorites. I enjoy Siri Mitchell as well. So many great reading choices! Between Two Shores is right there at the top for 2019! Love that history!

Good ones to compare...as far as little romance...Tamera Alexander’s newest With This Pledge is much more historical and less romance than most of her reads. It strikes me as similar in many ways. Burning Sky was recommended by another author, and she is now a must buy for me.

I am just now beginning this book so I can't compare it to others but I recently read The Captive Bride by Michelle Griep and this may be similar. Thanks for the book suggestions!

This is a hard one for me to compare to others simply because it's not a historical event I often read about. Instead it awakened a new interest for me.I absolutely loved it and highly recommend it!

Submitted by Susan P on
I have read two of those! I am so excited for this because I love history and I know you will knock it out of the park. :)

Submitted by Katie Andersen on
It has been a LONG time since I’ve read it, but it is one of my favorite books ever, Frontier’s Lady by Judith Pella. Between Two Shores is reminding me of that!

Submitted by Emilee on
I read the first 3 on your list. I loved all of them so I'm sure I will love your new book as well.
